The ASTM (American Society of Testing Materials) Standard Practice E 1929: Assessment of Certification Programs for Environmental Professions: Accreditation Criteria requires that environmental certification programs be accredited by an independent entity such as CESB.

The Standard Practice provides a 3-year phase-in period during which time the certification programs can self-accredit their own programs. However, this procedure requires the program to supply anyone, upon demand, extensive documentation demonstrating how the program complies with the practices prescribed by the Standard Practice.
